The Creative Process Behind MXTX ***NEW VIRTUAL EVENT***

Español Abajo.

As the United States government shut down over plans to build a divisive wall and destructive narratives intensified, the seeds for MXTX were planted. MXTX is a cross-border endeavor that resists, embracing a hybrid musical approach that empowers artists to engage across artistic, cultural, geographic, and political lines.

In this virtual experience that is part-studio-tour, part-talk, part-workshop, part DJ-dance-party, you'll get a taste of the project's first stage: the MXTX audio sample library, created through collaborative exchange between forty DJ-producers and composers from both sides of the Rio Grande. DJ-producer Orión García and composer-bandleader Graham Reynolds will give you a peek into their studios and creative processes. Using samples created and submitted by Mabe Fratti, Gibrana Cervantes and Concepción Huerta as well as highlight recent work of Microhm (Leslie García), you'll get to see how the same pieces of audio can be manipulated into radically different results, and get insight into how the two genres will effectively combine for the project's final form. The Projecto’s Coka Treviño will provide live Spanish translation, made available by the live chat that accompanies the stream, and Orión will close it out with a DJ set for a Peligrosa style dance party in your best quarantine form.

Presented by Golden Hornet and Co-Commissioned by Ballroom Marfa and Kathleen & Harvey Guion, MXTX will evolve into an open source audio sample library, an album, and a full scale live performance that will use the power and depth of the language of music to explore the issues where words often fail us. The complete work will celebrate its release with three premieres in early 2021, including in Austin as part of next year's Fusebox Festival. The endeavor is co-curated by Coka Treviño, Orión García, Felipe Pérez Santiago, and Graham Reynolds, and The Projecto serves as a project manager.

This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about how National Endowment for the Arts grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.
